Dwarves here like their food “spicy”. Their resistance to poison expands their culinary options to foods that will kill most. "Adventure Eaters" typically visit dwarven enclaves to “endure the spice”. Some claim to become resistant to poison if you eat their food enough. The death of one such visitor triggered the Law of Plates.
Over time, cookware, cutlery, dining ware, and drinking ware become poisonous as well. Dwarven (and all other poison-resistant humanoids) food containers must be black to denote their risk. Culturally, serving someone something to consume from a black item like a glass or plate, or even black food, is like saying, “I’m going to kill you.”
